Transforming Agricultural Biomass into High-Value Carbohydrates
Every year, millions of tons of agricultural biomass—including corn cobs, corn fiber, soybean hulls, sugarcane bagasse and others—are generated as low-value byproducts of food and agricultural production. These renewable resources contain abundant sugars that can serve as the foundation for a new generation of sustainable ingredients, sweeteners, and specialty chemicals.
zuChem has developed a proprietary carbohydrate biotechnology platform that uses advanced fermentation, metabolic engineering, and enzyme technology to convert renewable biomass into high-value carbohydrate products.
Our technologies enable the efficient production of specialty sugars, sugar alcohols, and other glycochemicals that are difficult or expensive to manufacture using conventional chemical processes. By leveraging biological systems, we create sustainable manufacturing routes that reduce dependence on energy-intensive chemical production while unlocking new opportunities for carbohydrate-based products.
Technology Platform
The zuChem platform combines proprietary strains, enzymes, and process technologies developed over more than two decades of carbohydrate research and commercialization.
Core platform capabilities include:
- Proprietary carbohydrate conversion enzymes
- Engineered microbial production strains
- Advanced metabolic engineering technologies
- Fermentation-based carbohydrate manufacturing
- Specialty sugar and polyol production systems
- Activated sugar building block technologies
- Glycochemical synthesis and modification methods
These capabilities provide a scalable foundation for the development and commercialization of food ingredients, nutritional products, specialty chemicals, and pharmaceutical intermediates.
Xylitol Fermentation Technology
Xylitol is one of the world’s most widely used functional sweeteners, valued for its sugar-like taste, reduced calorie content, and proven oral health benefits. It is commonly used in sugar-free foods, chewing gum, beverages, toothpaste, mouthwash, and nutritional products.
Today, virtually all commercial xylitol is produced through chemical hydrogenation processes that require significant energy inputs, specialized equipment, and highly purified feedstocks.
zuChem has developed the world’s first and only truly sustainable commercial fermentation process for the production of xylitol from renewable biomass feedstocks.
Using proprietary microorganisms and fermentation technology, the process converts biomass-derived sugars directly into high-purity xylitol. The technology enables production from abundant agricultural and forestry resources while reducing the environmental footprint associated with conventional manufacturing.
Key advantages include:
- Production from renewable biomass feedstocks – using mixed C5-C6 sugars
- Fermentation-based manufacturing rather than chemical hydrogenation
- Utilization of agricultural residues and byproducts
- Reduced energy consumption and environmental impact
- High product selectivity and yield
- Compatibility with industrial fermentation infrastructure
- Scalable, sustainable xylitol production
Developed in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the University of Illinois, and other research partners, the technology represents a breakthrough in industrial biotechnology and a new paradigm for xylitol manufacturing.
Mannitol Fermentation Technology
Mannitol is a naturally occurring sugar alcohol used in food, pharmaceutical, and personal care applications. With approximately half the sweetness of sugar and a desirable cooling effect, it is widely utilized in confectionery products, chewing gum, tablet formulations, cough drops, and specialty foods.
Building on its carbohydrate engineering expertise, zuChem has developed a proprietary fermentation process for the production of mannitol from inexpensive carbohydrate feedstocks. The technology offers a sustainable alternative to conventional manufacturing methods while delivering high yields and industrial scalability.
Like the xylitol platform, the mannitol process leverages biological conversion pathways to transform renewable resources into valuable specialty ingredients, creating new opportunities for sustainable carbohydrate manufacturing.
